Is a Myrtle Beach Amusement Park Needed?

Elissa Jarvis, Lead Reporter Friday, February 17, 2012

When people think of the glory days of Myrtle Beach, it’s normally thoughts of tanning on the beach, smelling the corndogs and fries from Peaches Corner, and taking a break from beach to ride the rides at the Pavilion amusement park. With the closure of the Pavilion in 2006, the question arises: does Myrtle Beach need an amusement park?

Long-time Myrtle Beach vacationers have always agreed that an amusement park was needed. Most of them want the Pavilion rebuilt so they can relive the glory days of Myrtle Beach. Obviously the owners of Hard Rock and later Freestyle Music Park felt like an amusement park was both needed and wanted in the Myrtle Beach area. But as the new owners of Freestyle Music Park, FPI LLC, have yet to find a backer for the park- it will remain closed for the 2012 season. “FPI still is confident the theme park could work under the right operator,” Franklin Daniels, the MB based lawyer, told the Sun News. FPI is still conducting interviews with perspective buyers hoping that the Amusement Park could reopen next year after three years of being closed.

With Myrtle Beach being without an amusement park for several years now, people are starting to wonder if an amusement park is really needed in the area. The vast majority of tourists come down to hit the beach and go shopping. Prior to the Pavilion’s final year, the amusement park wasn’t making enough money to cover operating costs. So does Myrtle Beach need an amusement park?
