Myrtle Beach Gears Up for the Marathon!

Elissa Jarvis, Lead Reporter Tuesday, February 14, 2012

It’s time to lace up your sneakers and get ready to run. This weekend is the Bi-lo Myrtle Beach Marathon and this year it’s bigger than ever! Organizers of the marathon have increased the capacity for the race this year, allowing up to 10,000 runners to join in one of three different races. Right now over seven thousand runners have signed up for one of the three events but runners can register up until Friday, so those numbers might increase.

If you are not running in the marathon this year, you might want to leave early if you are going to travel around Myrtle Beach. The marathon is 26.2 miles long and since Myrtle Beach isn’t even 26.2 miles long, the runners are definitely going to be noticeable. The marathon is starting just above the intersection of 21st Avenue North and Grissom Parkway. The runners will run up Grissom Parkway, cut over and run down Ocean Boulevard before running through Market Common and back up Hwy 17 to the finish at BB&T Coastal Field.  The marathon starts at 6:30 in the morning and is likely to end sometime around 2 pm, but event coordinators will be out as early as 4 in the morning setting up race stations. For more information check out our Events Page.
