Elissa Jarvis, Lead Reporter Saturday, February 11, 2012

Horry County Police Chief Johnny Morgan announced Friday that he would be retiring after 41 years of law enforcement.  Morgan, a graduate of Horry-Georgetown Technical College and the FBI Academy, has worked for Horry County for the last 38 years and even though he won’t officially retire until June 30th, his last day on the job will be February 19th. Morgan will be on extended leave,  and Capt. Saundra Rhodes will be acting as Police Chief in the interim.

In a statement released by Morgan, he said “My whole life has been in law enforcement and these fine men and women that serve to protect our county are my family and I will miss them. It is a sad day, but on the other hand one I have been looking forward to.”  Furthermore, He stated “I would like to thank the county for the many opportunities I have been afforded through my 38 years of employment with the Horry County Police Department. I am also grateful for a fulfilling career in which I was given every opportunity to make a difference in this great community.” Morgan is responsible for creating the HCPD’s homicide and SWAT units among others.
