Beloved Myrtle Beach Landmark Rebuilt

Elissa Jarvis, Lead Reporter Tuesday, December 27, 2011

Downtown Myrtle Beach is going to be sitting pretty once again, as a beloved landmark is getting a face lift. Peaches Corner, a restaurant located on the corner of Ocean Boulevard and 9th Avenue across from the former Pavilion site, is currently closed down for renovations.  Construction is expected to go into February but the restaurant is expected to reopen this spring just in time for their 75th anniversary.

Peaches Corner has been a cornerstone in downtown Myrtle Beach since its inception in 1937. The restaurant is named for the Peach family, who owned the restaurant from 1937 to 1943. It was bought in 1943 but the new owners decided to keep the name. Back when the restaurant first opened, hot dogs sold for 15 cents and beer for only a dime.

The renovations for Peaches Corner include: replacing the old blinking carnival signs and the giant wooden peaches in favor of new neon-lit signs, resurfacing the roof, removing and replacing rotting wood flooring and railing and fixing drainage problems.  A few surprises are in store too! “There is one very interesting piece that I am not going to reveal, but it will serve as the icon for Peaches Corner,” Briggs Dickerson told the Sun News. “The heart and the history of Peaches will be shown in our renovation.” Dickerson’s wife and family currently own and operate the restaurant. The Myrtle Beach Downtown Redevelopment Cooperation is providing matching funds to the Dickerson family to help renovate the building.

Are you excited to see the new renovations? Are you glad Peaches Corner is sticking around?
