Beloved CCU Coach Fired

Friday Night a beloved Coastal Carolina University (CCU) Coach was fired during a very low-key press conference.  Head Football Coach David Bennett was relieved of his coach duties. CCU President David DeCenzo told the press that Bennett will be reassigned to another position in the university.

This comes as a blow to CCU Football and Bennett who have already had a tough year. First there was his very strange tirade during a press conference before the CCU game to Catawba College. Bennett started talking about cats, dogs and a screen door and quickly lost anyone who was trying to follow his thought process. The video (featured below), of course, went viral and even Tosh.O covered Bennett’s strange rant.  Then Friday morning Wilson Beaver, the Football Equipment Coordinator at CCU, was arrested and charged with forgery and embezzlement.

President Decenzo speaking during the press conference said, “This was, to date, the hardest decision I have had to make as President of this institution… However, following an exhaustive review and assessment of our football program, I have concluded that new leadership is necessary to direct our program toward its goals. We will be forever grateful to David for shepherding our program from its beginning and developing our student-athletes into responsible members of our community."

Bennett has been the head football coach for CCU since the team’s inception in 2003. He led the CCU Chanticleers to four Big South Championships and was named the league’s Coach of the Year twice. Baring any last minute change, Bennett will coach the South in the FCS Senior Scout Bowl to be played in Myrtle Beach next weekend.

Bennett has become a mainstay at Coastal Carolina and his departure from head coaching duties will be sorely missed in the community. We, at Myrtle-Beach.com, wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors.
