Perry Christmas

Jimmy Wils Friday, December 09, 2011

Rick PerryRick Perry, everyone's favorite cartoon presidential hopeful from Texas, has stepped in it again, so it seems.  His latest campaign commercial makes a very clear attack on the loss of religious values in the United States.  He declares that there is something wrong in a country where "gays can serve openly in the military, but our kids can't openly celebrate Christmas."  He then proceeds to claim that, as President, he will stop Obama's attack on religion because he is not ashamed to be a Christian.  I wouldn't be surprised to see this guy waving a gun around at public rallies...oh, it seems he has done that, too (see picture to left).  Clearly, he is unfit to lead our country.  Instead, let's nominate an Olympic Organizing Committee CEO with no backbone on important issues, or a pizza magnate (too late, he removed himself), or a guy with a name that always makes me think of the Grinch.  Better yet, instead of this right wing religious nut, let's reelect a guy who pals around with anti-Americans and domestic terrorists and who's first term as President has both financially and morally bankrupted the nation.

Okay, so it's obvious I'm being facetious.  I'm not a staunch supporter of Rick Perry by any stretch, but is he really as bad as the liberal media wishes him to be?  I don't think so.  I think here we have a guy who's rooted in his values so much that he's not afraid to air them very publicly, even as a means to furthering his campaign aspirations.  Let's consider this: he's the Governor of Texas.  He was a US Representative from Texas.  He served in the US Air Force, which takes a certain amount of intelligence, if not muscle (as a former Marine, I have to insult the USAF where possible - it's in the contract).  This is not a stupid man.  Certainly, he knew when making the latest campaign ad that it was going to be controversial, and could hurt his campaign if spun the wrong way, which it has been.  But he had the courage to air it anyway.  These are his beliefs, and he's not ashamed of them.  He's reaching out to voters who believe the same way.  Unfortunately, we seem to be a minority.  But that's another story.

If you haven't seen the ad, take a moment to watch it, either on YouTube or however you watch Internet video.  When you have finished, return here and read on.  So?  Thoughts?  Pretty brazen, yes?  But let's break it down without a liberal filter attached to our magnifying glass.  What does he actually say that is so wrong?  Does he say, in this ad, that gays shouldn't serve in the military?  No, he doesn't.  What he says is that the values in this country have run amok when we pass legislation allowing them to serve openly, flying in the face of religious traditions, but we also discourage and even outlaw our the wishes of "Merry Christmas" in public society.  He is lamenting the loss of a sense of religious morality in this country, and I agree with him.  There IS an attack on religion in this country, unless of course the religion is either Islam or the complete LACK of religion, but Christianity bears the brunt of the attack.  Christian values are disappearing in America at an alarming rate, and Rick Perry is just one of millions of us that don't want to see that happen.  We all know that Hanukkah and Kwanzaa (don't get me started on Kwanzaa, please) are also celebrated in December, but Christmas is the central religious festival of this season.  It always has been.  If you don't believe me, watch any Wal-Mart or Target commercial airing in the middle of your favorite TV shows right now, and tell me how many times you hear the Dreidle Song playing in the background.  Christmas is all around us, and yet our kids aren't allowed to enjoy it anymore.  There is something very wrong with that, and Rick Perry is right on the money.

But let's face it, no one watching that ad waiting for Perry to slip up even heard him mention the word "Christmas."  All they heard were the words "gays" and "Obama."  That crazy Texan dared to mess with "progress," and for that he must pay.  Here's the irony - I guarantee that the majority of the gays in the military are also openly celebrating Christmas.  As well they should.

So, when is this country going to be fair again?  When will conservatives be allowed to declare their beliefs without fear of ridicule?  When will Christians be allowed to celebrate their faith without fear of censorship?

Merry Christmas, everyone.
