Want vs. Need?

James Boucher Tuesday, November 29, 2011

What does yelling, pushing and shoving, pepper spraying, tasering, fighting, and arrests all have in common? It means the holiday shopping season has begun.

I am sure by now everyone has seen different videos from throughout the country at shopping centers of people losing their sanity and having no common sense. There was one particular video from this past weekend that had me disturbed. This video was of a group of people fighting over $2.00 waffle makers. These people looked like a bunch of dogs that had been let out of their cages to be fed. This is just an example of what has become the norm of Black Friday.

The holiday season is not about the gifts or presents we receive. I am using this video in particular because it is only a waffle maker. I just find it baffling to see adults fighting over something that is not important. It just says how spoiled some Americans have become.

Money and presents will not buy happiness. Before you buy a present for yourself or someone else, ask yourself if you or that person really needs that gift. I am sure the people that were able to get the waffle maker will only use it a few times, then forget about it. How often have you bought clothing or a pair of shoes that you just needed to have, only for it to be used once and then sit in the closet. All these people saw was a reduced price for an item that was overstocked, impulse kicks in and people have to buy it. This is how business works and uses the consumer.

Use common sense this holiday season. Do I want it or need it?
