College: Traditional or Online?

Elissa Jarvis, Lead Reporter Monday, November 07, 2011

Are you going to college, or do you plan too? Will it be a traditional or online college?

In the recent years online colleges have been sprouting up everywhere. First there was University of Phoenix online, then Full-Sail University and now it seems every traditional university has some sort of online program attached to it. There are definitely perks to the online college: being able to go to class in your pajamas while watching TV and eating cereal is one of them. There is certainly a convenience to online colleges, and they make it easier to work and go to school at the same time.

But there are drawbacks too. They lack the interpersonal of a classroom setting. Teachers and fellow classmates never really get to know an online student. Plus there are things that simply cannot be taught online: chemistry experiments, dissection, and painting. Online colleges also lack the traditional college feel of commiserating with your classmates, or going to the library to study. Most professors I’ve talked to dislike the online approach to college suggesting that you never really know whose at the other end of the computer and if students are cheating. Also that it makes students lazy.

So what do you think: Is traditional or online college better?
