The battle has begun at Man O'War where water is the ever-present enemy from the first hole. Flanked by a 100-acre lake, the threat of water is usually more of a mental challenge than a physical challenge. Players must tee off over water nine times and hit approaches over water that fronts five greens. This intriguing Dan Maples design is created in a uniquely fair way by interweaving holes, which require different skills, in order for golfers of all skill levels and proficiencies to be rewarded.
This Myrtle Beach course also features rolling, medium-width fairways, minimal rough, and a sparse number of pine trees, giving even high handicappers a chance to thrive. The par-4 9th is the signature hole featuring an island fairway and an island green, inviting golfers to first hit over water and then into a green near the tip of the island. Although intimidating, there is ample room to hit, however the longer you go to the right of the fairway, the tougher your second shot will be. Bunkers line the left side that protect the ball from the water, but also grab the errant tee shot. The wind is a large factor with the second shot because of the wide open area. Along the backside, water plays an even bigger role. The 10th and 11th holes require tee and approach shots over water and the 14th & 15th holes feature island greens.
