3 Ways to Make 2016 Wildly Creative!

When you hear the word creative, what’s the first thing that comes to your mind?

For so many years, my mind went to art, drawing, and painting, and my stressful art classes which forced me to “be creative”.  Those classes were spent creatively trying to convince my best friend, Heidi to do my art projects for me. Let’s just say the Schaefer’s don’t carry the drawing gene.

Yet, over the years, my naive thinking was altered as I saw that everyone in their own right is in fact creative.  We have to be.  As creators made by a Creator, it’s in our bones.  It is our DNA!

So, when I went to look up the word create I was not surprised to find this definition:

To evolve from one’s own thought or imagination, as a work of art or an invention.

When you break it down this way, you can’t help but see that we are all creative beings, made by a Creator, to be creative.

This is just who we are! And it’s in the place of creating where life and love truly flourish.

When we stop creating, we stop living.

When we stop allowing our imagination to run wild, a part of us stops all together. It’s in the what could be, what might be, what do you want to be, that something deeper starts to ignite.

Believing that in the dreaming you are actually taking steps toward your desired reality.  So, reflecting back on my own journey with creativity, I wanted to share my top 3 tips to keep you tapping into your creativity in order to make sure your 2016 is FULL of LIFE, LOVE, and LOTS of ENERGY!

1.  Retreat

In order to advance, you must take time to retreat.  To turn off the TV, iPad, iPhone, or whatever else is vying for your attention, and allow some time and space to unwind, and allow your thoughts to settle.  Whatever that looks like for you, week in and week out do your best to make this a priority.

2.  Recharge

The movies are a definite recharge for me!

Once you’ve settled into a good place with #1, now you must decide how you best recharge.  Is it by the beach? In a coffee shop? Or at the movies?  Are you reading a book, listening to a podcast, or journaling? The key is figuring out what activities will help you move forward so you can be firing on all cylinders, and feel truly recharged.  Of course if you are an extrovert, part of your recharge time might be best spent in community, with friends and family.  Lastly, remember what works for your spouse, co-worker, or best friend might not be what works best for you.

3.  Release

Now you are ready to rock and roll! You have retreated, you have recharged, and now it’s time to let it all out! Maybe you want to use that energy to dive into a new work project, a new hobby, or a fun outing with friends.  Maybe you just want to use that energy to enter into the week with a greater sense of peace and clarity.  And for you introverts (myself included) don’t linger too long on your island of recharge, eventually you’ll get lonely, and need to release that life with others!

So, here’s to a great 2016 – full of CREATIVE thoughts, ideas, projects, and time with friends. Because you are creative, made by a infinitely Creative Creator.

This is who you are.  Embrace it!
